ATM/Debit Card Safety

Your ATM/debit card is a convenient way to access the funds in your account and make purchases. Keep it safe by following these smart practices for protecting your card.

  • Treat your card like cash.
  • Always store your card in a safe place.
  • Memorize your PIN and do not share it with anyone.
  • Only shop online at secure sites (look for “HTTPS” in the Web address or the closed padlock icon in the bottom frame of your browser).
  • Protect your card’s magnetic stripe from damage.
  • Report a lost or stolen card immediately.
  • Review account statements regularly.
  • Never respond to an unsolicited request.

When you visit an ATM, there are also several things you can do to protect your information.

  • Only use well-lit, unobstructed ATMs and observe your surroundings before starting a transaction.
  • Have your card out and ready to use. When your transaction is complete, put your card, money, and receipt away, and immediately leave the area. Never count your money while at the ATM.
  • Only enter your PIN once for a transaction. If you are prompted to enter your PIN twice, or if you notice unusual messages on the screen go to another ATM.
  • Block the view of others when using an ATM.
  • Look for possible fraudulent devices attached to an ATM. If the ATM appears to have any attachments or alterations to the card slot or keypad, do not use the terminal.
  • Keep your doors locked, windows up, and your engine running at a drive-through ATM.
  • Always leave enough room between vehicles to allow for a quick exit.
  • If anyone follows you after making an ATM transaction, drive immediately to a crowded, well-lit area and call the police.

Credit Card Safety

MCT Credit Union employs the latest systems and technology to monitor and prevent card fraud, and merchants also take the necessary precautions to protect your card information. You can be proactive, too. Take these practical steps to help protect your card information:

  • Shop with merchants you know. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Check your account statement promptly and immediately report any transactions that you do not recognize.
  • Guard your card – do not use it as collateral or give out your card number to someone calling on the phone, unless you initiated the call for a purchase.
  • Check your credit report at least annually to ensure its accuracy.
  • Register your card to use Verified by Visa® and shop online with merchants that participate in the Verified by Visa® service. This provides additional protection against unauthorized use of your card online.
